Greetings From The Pastor

Sidney A. Locks, Jr., Pastor

Welcome to The Kingdom Year of Our Lord Jesus, the Christ, 2010.

Our 2010 Vision is "Impacting Our World Through Christ".

Twenty years ago, this year, our family packed up all we possessed and left Lumberton, NC to answer the Call of God and join you here at Cornerstone. What a glorious and yet challenging journey it has been. God has been faithful, just as God promised. Through many dangers, toils and snares, we have already come... And the very best for us all in God is still before us.

In Luke 9:23, Jesus says: "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me". Jesus sets forth an Opportunity, A Process and A Purpose for Christian Lifestyle. Here, He calls us out of tradition into the streets of this life to follow Him in saving souls. I encourage you to seek knowledge and training this year in discipleship lifestyles. Read Jesus' teaching and commands in Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Study Paul's selfless journey to become more like Him. Let us not be hearers only!

Carol, Eddie, Freddie, Odetta, James and I wish to thank you for all your love, support and encouragement over these twenty years. I remain yours to His glory!

We love you,

Sidney A. Locks, Jr., Pastor

Cornerstone Center for Science, Technology & Leadership Development

Mission

Our Mission is to provide youth with leadership development training and educational support in the areas of STEM related courses to augment their matriculation in public school.

Then

The Cornerstone Center For Science, Technology, and Leadership Development began as a math tutoring program in the 2000-2001 school year. It was held two days a week.

Now

The Center as it exists today was founded in 2009, and was named the Leadership Academy. Thus, other programs were added in addition to the tutoring program. In August of 2011, the Leadership Academy officially changed its name to The Cornerstone Center for Science, Technology and Leadership Development.

This Center is divided into four main components…

Tutorial Program
This program provides tutoring services for K-12 students, mainly in the subject areas of mathematics and the sciences. This program also conducts workshops for SAT, EOG, Leadership Building (skill) seminars. It also provides individual and group counseling.

Reading Enrichment Program
This program is conducted bi-weekly on Saturdays for grade levels K-5. This is for at-risk or underprivileged students. The sessions are normally from 9am -12pm. Special events may cause the program to run as late as 2pm.

Recreation Program
This program provides free-play basketball during after-school hours. Periodically this program will provide lessons for participation in a more structured manner (i.e. Golf, fencing, martial arts, etc).

Summer Camp
It is an eight week (35 hrs/week) camp held over the course of summer break for grades K-12. It provides a structured academic curriculum of math, science, reading, and writing. Recreation, field trips, and other extra curricular activities are also provided.

For years, my sister and her family have been active members of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Our families have many cherished memories tied to the church, especially the summer camp where our kids would reconnect and bond. Although we live in Pennsylvania, we made it a tradition to attend the late-morning Sunday service at Cornerstone Baptist whenever we visited Greenville, NC. The kids, now grown and scattered across the country, often reminisce about those special times. Christmas gatherings at my sister’s house are particularly meaningful, as they always include the church’s beautiful holiday services, which have become a cornerstone of our family traditions. Recently, however, the church found itself at the center of a controversy that left the congregation divided. My sister and other church members organized an online fundraiser to support a local family in need. They chose to partner with Slots Capital Casino, an online platform offering revenue-sharing opportunities. Financially, the initiative was a success, raising significant funds quickly. However, the method sparked intense debate within the congregation. Many members, deeply rooted in the church’s strong anti-gambling ethos, expressed dismay, arguing that the partnership contradicted the church's values. The controversy highlighted the tension between innovative fundraising approaches and adherence to traditional principles. While some praised the fundraiser's intentions and outcomes, others felt it compromised the integrity of the church’s teachings. The aftermath left a lasting impression on the community and provided much to reflect on regarding the intersection of faith, ethics, and modern challenges. Julia Moreno

More Background on CMBChurch.com

Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church: A Pillar of Faith and Community Service Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church (CMBC) stands as a beacon of faith, community service, and spiritual growth in Greenville, North Carolina. With a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, this church has evolved into a vibrant center of worship, education, and outreach. This comprehensive article will explore the church's history, ministries, community impact, and cultural significance.

Historical Roots and Growth

The origins of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church can be traced back to its humble beginnings as Hickory Hill Baptist Church. Named after a prominent hickory tree near its original location, the church was initially situated in downtown Greenville. Over the years, the church underwent several transformations, including name changes and relocations, reflecting its growth and adaptation to the community's needs. In the 1920s, under the leadership of Rev. W. H. Bryant, the church acquired property at the corner of Railroad Street and 13th Street. It was at this time that the name was changed to Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, symbolizing its role as a foundational institution in the community. Rev. Bryant laid the cornerstone of the new building before his resignation in 1924, marking a significant milestone in the church's history. The subsequent decades saw a succession of pastors who each contributed to the church's development and expansion. Notable among these was Rev. Arlee Griffin, Jr., who began his tenure in 1980. Under his leadership, the church experienced substantial growth, with membership increasing to over 500. This period was marked by a deepening of Christian commitment and discipleship among the congregation.

Modern Era and Community Impact

The late 20th and early 21st centuries brought further growth and community engagement for Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Sidney A. Locks, who became pastor in 1989, introduced a vision of financial stewardship, encouraging the congregation to become a "100% tithing church." This approach aimed to eliminate the need for special fundraising events and strengthen the church's financial foundation. During Rev. Locks' tenure, the church made significant strides in expanding its facilities and services. In 1998, a 7,000 square foot Child Development Center was constructed, capable of serving 150 children and families. This addition underscored the church's commitment to education and family support within the community. The church's resilience and community spirit were particularly evident during the "Flood of the Century" in September 1999. Cornerstone rose to the occasion, becoming a regional and national distribution center for disaster relief. This effort, coordinated with the Progressive National Baptist Convention, showcased the church's ability to mobilize resources and support those in need during times of crisis.

Leadership and Vision

In recent years, Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church has continued to evolve under new leadership. In September 2016, Rev. Dr. Stephen Greene Howard assumed the role of Senior Pastor. His tenure has been characterized by a renewed focus on discipleship and mission initiatives at local, national, and global levels. Dr. Howard's leadership has brought about several structural changes within the church. New commissions were established, including Prayer, Stewardship, Strategic Planning, Heritage, and Discipleship Commissions. These additions reflect a comprehensive approach to church governance and spiritual development. One of the significant changes under Dr. Howard's leadership was the reintroduction of a second worship service. This expansion of worship opportunities demonstrates the church's commitment to accommodating its growing congregation and providing flexible options for members to engage in communal worship.

The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, necessitated rapid adaptations in how the church conducts its services and outreach programs. This digital transition has not only helped in navigating the immediate challenges of the pandemic but has also positioned the church to reach a broader audience beyond its physical location.

The ongoing development of youth programs, coupled with initiatives aimed at addressing current social issues, suggests that Cornerstone is positioning itself as a forward-thinking institution. Its commitment to education in science and technology fields, as evidenced by the Cornerstone Center, reflects an understanding of the skills needed for future success.
